Homosassa Manatee Tour

Paddle and Swim with Manatees! During winter, manatees migrate to the clear, warm spring waters at the top of this river, making it a popular spot to view them in their natural habitat. There is an opportunity to swim with them if you'd like to bring your snorkel gear, and this spot is waaaay less crowded than Crystal River. The beautiful Homosassa River is also abundant with birds, fish, turtles, and bordered by palm, cypress and oak trees. We'll explore all the nooks and crannies in this area, including the some narrow tributaries with mesmerizing turquoise water where sting rays, cormorants, and river otters like to play. Then we'll make our way downriver, paddling alongside manatees, osprey, and pelicans, saying good bye for now until we make landfall at the launch site, with our souls full.

Location: Homosassa, FL
When: Year Round: November-March = Manatee season

Next, we’ll paddle up the beautiful Homosassa River, abundant with manatees, birds, fish, turtles, and bordered by palm, cypress and oak trees. Our second stop, Manatee Pub, is the perfect divey spot with dollar bills decorating the walls, cold beer, a pool table, and cash only service. Then we'll cross to the opposite shoreline and head downriver to dock at Krump's Landing. This sprawling establishment has a sandy beach with adirondack chairs, 2 huge shaded tiki bars, and live music! Here we can enjoy full liquor and lunch service to satisfy our paddle-induced appetites. Looping back we'll take out at Monkey Bar where you can choose to hang here as long as you want to enjoy an overlook of Monkey Island, as this is the last stop on our tour. This narrow, spring-fed river is family-friendly, perfect for wildlife viewing, and boasts some of the most beautiful scenery of any Florida waterway. We'll begin with just a short distance upstream near the headsprings to the view the clearest, bluest section of river. It'll be all downstream from there and the swift current makes it easy enough for inexperienced paddlers (and those who just want to enjoy a lazy morning on the river) to glide with the flow. The first portion of the journey within the state park is surrounded by protected wetlands and forest. Wading birds, schools of mullet, turtles, and manatees are some of the animals you’ll likely see on or near the water as the river twists and turns.
